Tepeth Celebrate Cultural Day Against FGM

The Tepeth, one of the minority groups in Karamoja sub region marked its 6th cultural day’s celebrations on January 23rd, 2018 under the theme, "Engage with communities to keep girls uncut and accelerate FGM/C abandonment".

The day is celebrated annually since 2012 to accelerate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) abandonment from the Tepeth community. FGM is practiced by the Tepeth community in Moroto, Pokot in Amudat and Nakapiripirit and three other districts of Kween, Bukwo and Kapchorwa in Sebei sub region.

Tepeth 6th culture day celebrations held at Tapac sub county headquarters brought together members of the Tepeth community in Tapac and Katikekile sub counties. It was held under the theme 'Engagement of Communities for FGM/C Abandonment'.

The State minister for Karamoja affairs, Moses Kizige was chief guest and was accompanied by his wife and children. The function was attended by almost all UN agencies in Karamoja and it was ranked the best since the Tepeth culture day celebrations were initiated.

At the function, both elders and children made commitments to abandon FGM. Children pleaded with government through songs to help them catch up with life through education and other programs since they have been kept away by FGM.
